Chandlings School | Reception

Reception

The Reception classes are situated around a designated secure outdoor learning area, in a beautiful lavender courtyard. Each class has an average of twelve children, who enjoy a superb variety of classroom based activities enabling them to fully access all six areas of the Foundation Stage Curriculum.

A love of reading often begins in the Nursery and continues in Reception where all children enjoy weekly visits to our lovely well stocked library. Small classes ensure that every child has the opportunity to read and write every day. We use a synthetic phonic approach when teaching reading, writing and spelling.  Children love to write freely and thoroughly enjoy writing about their experiences.

We place great emphasis on mathematical development. Mathematical skills are practised both indoors and outdoors. You may well see your child weighing or measuring in our sandpit!

Our stunning grounds provide many opportunities for learning about the world around us. Observational nature walks help the children to look at habitats and notice the changing seasons.

A wide range of playground equipment encourages children to develop their physical skills as well as providing lots of fun. Two PE lessons with specialist games teachers and swimming in our own indoor pool each week provide plenty of exercise for young children.

Creativity at Chandlings is positively encouraged through drama, music and art. There is never a dry eye in the house by the end of our annual Nativity! Outings are hugely popular with Reception. Highlights during the year include a trip to Farmer Gow’s to see the lambs, an ‘Animal Encounter’ here at school, an adventure in Cotswold Wildlife Park and a ‘Pirates and Princesses’ fancy dress party.
