Chandlings School | School Lunches

School Lunches and Healthy Eating

Our aim at Chandlings is to serve locally produced food of superb quality which we know our children will enjoy eating. We encourage choice, and one of our aims is to incorporate a greater range of foods from different cultures thus ensuring children are able to experience new tastes and textures by having a varied and exciting menu. We have included a variety of “themed lunches” and the following is an example of our commitment to encourage a variety of new foods:

  • Egyptian
  • Around the World (Italian, French, Mexican, South African)
  • Chinese
  • Victorian
  • Vegetarian Week

We have introduced organic milk and fresh fruit in our morning break for Nursery and Reception children.  All pupils are encouraged to eat fruit in the mid morning break. All our meals are prepared in-house, by our Chef Manager, Ruth Castle, who uses fresh produce (local if possible) and there is always a choice of a hot meal as well as a cold meal from the Salad Bar, offering a minimum of two protein choices and seven salads varying on a daily basis. Fresh fruit, organic yoghurt or a hot pudding are always part of our daily menu. Water is on every table and our children are also encouraged to drink water throughout the day. Our meals are fresh, balanced, appetising, sometimes fun and well cooked.  We do not serve processed food or use any GM products.

Our plans for the future are to increase our range of organic/locally produced foods, and to produce a greater range of dishes from other cultures. We hope to introduce more seasonal vegetables, and to raise environmental awareness throughout the school by recycling more packaging and using vegetable and fruit peelings for our newly purchased compost bins. We strive to improve the menus and source a greater range of locally produce to support the nutritional and environmental messages.

I am also available to discuss with parents any particular concerns they may have regarding children who have a lactose intolerance, and those who may require coeliac and vegan choices. Please note that Chandlings is a nut free school.
