English
Using the National Curriculum as a framework, our aim in the English Department is to offer stimulating and enjoyable lessons, developing each individual child’s potential and ability to speak articulately, read confidently and produce accurate written work that engages the reader.
Our recent inspection report noted that “the standard of creative writing at Chandlings is very high”. We believe that in order for creativity to flourish and develop, the foundations of literacy must be strong so we use a synthetic phonic approach in the Pre-Prep Department when teaching reading, writing and spelling. In later years our programmes of study for each year group include appropriate focused teaching of grammar, spelling and handwriting. Homework and spelling tests are set weekly in the Prep Department.
Children’s interest in reading, supported by knowledgeable specialist teachers and a chartered librarian, is fostered within the classroom through exposure to a wide range of lively texts and amplified by regular theatre trips, author visits, competitions and the exciting activities of our biennial Book Week.
