Sport

There are wonderful opportunities for sport at Chandlings. Football, rugby, hockey and rounders pitches, a brand new cricket pavilion, netball and tennis courts, two swimming-pools – indoor and outdoor, a large hall for gymnastics and modern dance and even a nine hole golf course all make up the truly exceptional facilities which are contained within our spectacular sixty acre site.

From Reception onwards, children have timetabled lessons each week in Games, Swimming and Physical Education. PE includes general movement, ball skills, gym and dance. All are taught by fully qualified staff and, for the youngest, the teacher has the assistance of lifeguards and teaching assistants in the water. Most children are swimming confidently by the age of seven.

From  Year 2 onwards, Games are taught separately to boys and girls. The boys are learning soccer, rugby, cricket and athletics, and the girls are learning to play netball, hockey, rounders, tennis and athletics.

By Years 5 and 6, all physical education is split, with very different emphases for the girls in creative gym and dance. The boys continue with gym, swimming, basketball and hockey in PE.

It is extremely important to us that every child has the same teaching and opportunity to experience a very wide range of games and physical activities. There is a full programme of house and school matches, with team practices to develop the skills, teamwork and competitive approach required. We also field teams for the less able, so that all children have the opportunity to play for the school in several sports at some stage in their time at Chandlings.
