Music

The Director of Music, Marcus Luckett and the Assistant Director, Liz Kelly together with a further thirteen instrumental specialists welcome you to the music page.

Over the years we have grown from modest beginnings into one of the most dynamic and productive departments in the school. We enjoy fantastic modern facilities specially designed and built in 2007.These include two spacious and well-resourced rooms for class music lessons with, amongst other things, a wide variety of percussion for the Pre Prep and 10 Yamaha keyboards for the Prep children. Our visiting instrumentalists teach in the four light and well-proportioned studios, one of which houses our Young Chang baby grand piano.

Every child in the school benefits from 60 minutes of class music lessons per week, during which their musical skills and understanding are developed through fun, engaging and challenging activities. We aim to produce confident well-rounded musicians and to equip our children with a lifelong appreciation of music. We love to sing here at Chandlings and music plays a vital role in assemblies and whole school events. Music is for everyone!

At least half the children in the school sign up for more; including learning to play instruments, singing in choirs, participating in ensembles and joining our orchestras. The choice of instruments we offer is amazing and suits all tastes: piano, voice, violin, ’cello, harp, guitar, clarinet, saxophone, flute, cornet, trumpet, horn, trombone, drum kit, recorder. These extra lessons, given during the course of the school day, inspire our children to play regularly at home and to reach their full musical potential. Many who choose to devote extra time to music reach high standards in their music-making: we host ABRSM Exams twice a year and our Upper Prep Chamber Choir regularly takes part in national competitions and local festivals.

Musical highlights of the school year include our inspirational performances every Christmas, lunchtime recitals every term, concerts in the summer, and of course our bi-annual extravaganza ‘Music Week’!
